A Triptych is a single work of art made up of 3 separate images. It is often presented in a landscape orientation.
The 3 images should be coherent with each other.
For example, they can show a single subject in three different ways or environments (like the same vase with different flowers). They can show 3 different parts of a single object (a close-up of the beak of the bird, of the feet of the bird and then the whole bird). They can portrait an action progressing in time (like the ingredients for a cake, the process of making the cake and the final cake). They can also show the passage of time (the bud of a rose, the full grown rose and the decaying flower). Or else, it can be a single image split 3 ways (this works well with abstract images and landscape). You get the drift – use your imagination.
In addition to the coherence of the subject matter, attention should be paid to the total mood of the overall triptych in terms of light, colour harmony and balance of the different images. For example, 3 high-key images would probably be a better choice than 2 high-key and 1 low-key images.
The three images do not have to be of the same size but they usually show better when separated by blank spaces. The area surrounding the 3 images can be white, black or any other colour of your choice, in harmony with your choice of images.
The three image components can be created as a triptych using the Print Module of Lightroom, Photoshop or another processing software of your choice.
The triptych should be sized according to the MCC competition size (maximum width of 3840 pixels and a maximum height of 2160 pixels). That means that if you used Lightroom or Photoshop to assemble the components of your final image using the Print Module, after you export it as a JPEG image, you may need to re-import it into your software and export it again using the correct dimensions in order to resize the image.
Again, don’t forget to have fun.
Send your images to Carole Duhaime at [email protected]. The deadline for sending your images is Thursday August 13, 2020 at midnight. The results will be presented online on Monday August 24, 2020.
