BIO - JOYCE BORENSTEIN
Joyce Borenstein has a B.A. from McGill University, majoring in piano performance. Influenced by the films of Norman McLaren and Ryan Larkin, she obtained her M.F.A. in film animation from the California Institute of the Arts, studying under Jules Engel and Pat O’Neill. Her student film REVISITED won several important prizes and helped to open the doors of the National Film Board of Canada. New York photographer Lida Moser (1920−2014), who worked for Vogue magazine, scoured the province of Quebec in the summer of 1950. She took over 1,000 photos of a country and a society on the verge of modernity. 60 years later, Lida Moser recalls and narrates her historic trip. As she recounts her journey, this short film presents a captivating flow of photos, animations, and accelerated footage, accompanied by the photographer’s voice and archived footage. BIO - DAVID DUCHENS
It was thanks to a gift from my grandparents at the age of 14, a Miranda reflex REII camera, that I took my first steps in photography. My interest grew and grew, turning into a real passion in the early 1990s. Even then, architecture was my favourite subject. I spent almost three years photographing the inner courtyards of Parisian buildings, discovering many unusual places and getting to know my city better, which I tirelessly criss-crossed, always on the lookout for new places to photograph. It was in 2005 that I began to take an interest in digital technology, which had been revolutionizing the photographic industry for several years by then. I acquired my first digital camera, a Nikon D70, along with several lenses. The digital file, which replaces film, can be easily developed on a computer. So I began to take an interest in Adobe Photoshop, which I would study again and again, to try and add a personal touch to my images. As you can see from my pictures, I don't always try to represent reality, although I always start from real scenes. After many years spent photographing mainly in color, it's thanks to black & white that I now express myself most often in my work. I like to work with strong contrasts and varied light effects, in order to create images with a strong visual impact. BIO - NINA WELCH-KLING
Nina Welch-Kling is a New York City-based photographer originally from a small town in southern Germany. Her background in fine art and architecture combined with a love for roaming the city streets inform her photographic depictions of everyday life. Welch-Kling holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1990) and a Master of Architecture from The University of California, Los Angeles (1993). Since 1995 she has lived in New York City raising her two, now college-aged daughters, while continuing to explore creative outlets defined by her passion for photography. "Like the best of street photographers, Nina Welch-Kling finds joy in wandering city streets and paying attention to the endless flow and changes that happen there. She notices momentary eye-catching juxtapositions of people, architecture, shadows, visual rhymes. And she photographs them in a manner that allows the viewer to see what she sees, allowing us to share in the moment of delight or surprise while soaking in all of the other activities in the context of her framing. Then she takes her gift one step further, by pairing photographs in what she calls “Duologues”. These diptychs produce visual echoes that evoke new ideas, new meanings, new connections — encouraging viewers to energize their own ways of seeing.
